Art & Design

Overview:

Art and design embodies some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment and make their own personal responses. We encourage pupils to think critically and learn how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture through exploring the Art of others. Personal response cultivates confidence. Usually, it is helpful if you take the subject at GCSE in order to study the subject at a higher level.

Intent:

At the outset of KS3, the aim is “to get it” by demonstrating our understanding and learning of skills and techniques. In turn, having that knowledge and the knowledge that practice will help us to improve and create as the journey continues to Year 8 and to Year 9. Confidence and enjoyment facilitate drawing for purpose. Responding to the ideas and work of others also teaches empathy, patience, resilience, reflection and determination, all skills that are extremely marketable in many professions beyond the obvious creative ones. Ultimately, it must inspire and challenge, whilst developing proficiency, enabling learners to navigate their own independent journey to qualification.
